Autism was first identified in the early 20th century, and gained recognition as a distinct condition in the 1970s and 1980s.
During that time, diagnostic criteria was introduced. At first, this focused on observable behaviours like social interaction difficulties and repetitive behaviours. Since then, we have gained a broader understanding of autism. It is increasingly recognised that Autism encompasses a wide spectrum of abilities and challenges..
Did you know there’s been a rise in the reported prevalence of autism?
This has been partly linked to a better awareness, diagnosis, and changes in the way ASD is assessed. You can be reassured that Child Mental Health Clinic uses the latest diagnostic methods to carry out assessments for children and adolescents.
Research into the causes and treatments for autism have also advanced. Studies have explored genetic factors, environmental influences, brain structure and function, and various therapies aimed at improving the quality of life for individuals with ASD.
What are the signs your teenager could benefit from an ASD assessment?
There are a number of signs, which could indicate your child might need an assessment, including difficulties with social interaction.
They might struggle to understand social cues, make eye contact, maintain conversations, and form friendships. They may prefer to be alone or have difficulty understanding social norms and expectations.
Many teenagers with autism also struggle with understanding sarcasm or figurative language. You might find they use repetitive language, or struggle to express their emotions. They may experience intense emotions, have difficulty recognizing and interpreting the emotions of others, or struggle to regulate their responses in social situations.
Another common sign is restricted and intense interests in a particular topic. They may become upset or anxious if their routines are disrupted. Some teens with autism may be hypersensitive or hyposensitive to sensory stimuli such as sounds, lights, textures, or smells. They may become overwhelmed or distressed in sensory-rich environments.
